Losing your house keys can happen to anyone, and in Tucson, it often comes with extra challenges. From the blazing summer heat to seasonal population changes, being locked out is more than an inconvenience. It can be a safety issue and a costly mistake if handled the wrong way. This guide will walk you through what to do if you loose your key's, how to keep your home secure, and how to prevent the situation from happening again.

The First 10 Minutes: Before You Call Anyone

Think back to the last door you locked or the last time you started the car. Check jacket pockets, the bottom of bags, the car seat gap, the ignition, and the trunk. A lot of keys turn up on the patio table or still hanging in the front door.

Many local grocery stores and coffee shops keep lost and found logs and can hold items for several days.

Call the Places You Stopped

Grocery stores, gyms, coffee shops and restaurants usually hold lost keys at the front desk or service counter. A two-minute call can save you the whole problem.

Check for a Spare Key

A roommate, family member or neighbor may have one. If you rent, call your landlord or property manager. Many keep a key on file, but some charge a fee or can't come out after hours.

Are you locked out right now?

Don't break a window or pry the door. A lot of Tucson homes have steel security screen doors, and forcing one usually costs more to fix than the lockout. Call me at 520-442-5008. I'm open 24/7 and I'm often there in 15 to 20 minutes. There's a $49 service call, you get the price before I start, and there's no charge unless the job is done.

If you cannot access your spare or the keys are truly gone, it is time to call a professional. A good locksmith will get you back inside without damaging your locks and can also help you take additional steps to protect your home.

Do I Need to Rekey After Losing My Keys?

It depends on one question: could whoever finds your keys figure out where you live? If they could, the old key is a way into your house.

When I'd Rekey the Same Day

  • The keys were with your wallet, ID or anything with your address on it.

  • Your car key or fob was on the ring, and the car is parked at your house.

  • A garage door remote was on the ring.

  • The keys were stolen, not just lost.

  • You can't account for every key after a breakup, a roommate moving out or a new tenant moving in.

When You Can Probably Wait

If the keys went down a storm drain, into a lake, or somewhere nobody could connect them to you, getting a new key cut may be all you need. When you're not sure, rekeying is usually cheaper than replacing every lock. The locks stay, and the old key just stops working.

What a Lost-Key Call Costs in Tucson

Every call starts with a $49 service call to come to you. The rest depends on how many locks you have and whether you want them rekeyed or replaced. Rekeying usually $20 to $30 per lock after the first one. A locksmith should be able to give you the total before any work starts.

What I Can Do on the Same Visit

I carry a key cutting machine and rekey pins in the van, so I can get you inside, rekey the locks and cut new keys in one trip. If you'd like, I can set every door to work with the same key so you only carry one.

A Real Lost-Key Call From Tucson

A customer in Oro Valley called me after their purse was taken from their car while they ran errands. Their house keys and an ID with their address were inside. They still had their push-to-start key, so the car was fine, but whoever had that purse could find the house. I rekeyed every lock the same day, so the lost keys stopped working.

  • How to keep it from happening again

  • Leave a spare with someone you trust who lives nearby.

  • Use a lockbox in a shaded spot, not a key under the mat or a flowerpot.

  • Put a key tracker like an Air Tag or Tile on your ring.

  • Think about a keypad or smart lock on the front door so there's no key to lose.

  • Keep my number saved: 520-442-5008.

If you live in a student-heavy area like around the University of Arizona, or in a neighborhood with a lot of rental turnover, you may want to change or rekey your locks more often as a precaution.

Questions People Ask Me About Lost House Keys

Can a locksmith make a house key without the original?

Yes. The usual way is to rekey the lock to a new key, which also means any lost copy stops working

I rent. Can I rekey my own locks?

Check your lease first. Many landlords want a copy of the new key or want to approve the work. I can leave an extra key for your landlord.
