Honda Ignition Repair in Tucson, AZ

If your Honda key has started sticking, needs jiggling or won’t turn at all, the ignition cylinder is worn out. It isn’t your imagination and it isn’t something you did wrong. Honda used a lock design that wears over time, and after fifteen or twenty years of the same key going in, it stops gripping.

The dealer’s answer is a whole new ignition, usually over $1,000, and the new cylinder comes keyed to a different code than your doors. You drive away carrying two keys that don’t match.

We rebuild the cylinder that’s already in your car. $349, in your driveway, and you keep one key that works everything.

Why Honda Ignitions Wear Out

Two things wear them out, and they work on each other.

The cylinder. Inside the ignition is a stack of small brass wafers that read the cuts on your key. Honda’s design loads those wafers harder than most, and brass is soft. Years of turning, plus the weight of a full keyring hanging off it every day, rounds them over. Once they’re rounded they stop seating, and the cylinder stops turning.

The key. A key cut in a single pass per side comes off the machine with tiny burrs along the grooves. You can’t see them or feel them, but every time that key goes in, those burrs drag across the brass wafers like a file. A poorly cut key wears out the ignition you just paid to fix.

That’s why we cut in more than one pass per side and deburr every key before it goes in your hand. It takes us an extra minute and it’s the difference between an ignition that lasts and one that wears out again.

The Hondas We See This On

By a wide margin, the 2004 to 2012 Honda Civic. After that:

Honda Accord · Honda CR-V · Honda Element · Honda Odyssey · Honda Pilot · Honda Fit

If yours isn’t on the list, call anyway. The same cylinder design runs across the lineup and across a lot of model years, and Acura shares it on several of theirs.

Dealer Replacement vs. Our Rebuild

The dealer replaces the cylinder. We rebuild the one you have. That one difference is where the price and the two-key problem both come from.

What they do: The dealer replaces the whole cylinder with a new unit. We rebuild your cylinder with new wafers.

Price: Dealer, $1,000 and up. Us, $349.

Your keys after: Dealer, two keys, because the new ignition key won’t open your doors. Us, one key runs the ignition, doors and trunk.

Key code: Dealer, a new code unrelated to the rest of the car. Us, matched to your original code.

Getting there: Dealer, tow it in and leave it. Us, we come to you.

Remote head key: Dealer, extra. Us, included on most models.

What $349 Covers

• Your cylinder pulled and rebuilt with new wafers

• Keyed back to your original code, so one key still runs the whole car

• A new remote head key, cut and programmed, included on most models

• Every key cut in multiple passes and deburred, so the fresh wafers stay fresh

• Done at your home, your work or wherever the car is parked

• 1 to 3 month warranty on parts and labor for the parts we supply

Get the Spare Cut While We’re There

The best time to get a spare is while the cylinder is already open and we already have the code in hand. Come back for it later and you’re paying another service call for the same key.

There’s a second reason, and it matters more. A spare copied off your old worn key carries that wear straight into the new wafers. Cut from the code instead, it’s clean, which is the whole point of rebuilding the ignition.

Two spares is the right number on a car you plan to keep.

Honda Ignition Questions

Can a Honda ignition be repaired instead of replaced?

Yes, in most cases. The cylinder comes out, worn wafers get replaced with new ones, and it goes back in keyed to your original code. Replacement is what a dealer does because it’s faster for them, not because it’s the only option.

Why would the dealer’s fix leave me with two keys?

A replacement cylinder arrives keyed to its own new code. Unless someone rekeys it to match your doors and trunk, your new ignition key won’t open anything else on the car. A rebuild keeps your original code, so the problem never comes up.

How much is Honda ignition repair in Tucson?

$349 for the rebuild, including a remote head key on most models. Dealer replacement quotes in this area generally run $1,000 and up.

How long does it take?

Most are done in about an hour, in your driveway. You don’t need to leave the car anywhere.

My key turns but the car won’t start. Is that the ignition too?

Maybe, but it’s a different problem. If the key turns freely and nothing happens, that points to the electrical switch behind the cylinder, the chip in the key or the battery. Call and tell us exactly what happens, and we can usually narrow it down on the phone.

Do I have to tow it?

No. We’re mobile, and the whole job happens wherever the car is sitting.

Call Before It Strands You

A sticking Honda ignition does not get better. It goes from jiggling, to jiggling for a minute, to not starting in a parking lot. Catching it while the key still turns means a scheduled visit in your driveway instead of a tow.

Call 520-442-5008. We’ll tell you the price on the phone before we head out.
